Tips for renting cars and vans in the Philippines.
- If you know your way around manila and Philippines, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t
take public transportation. Fare is cheap. $10 for an 8 hr bus ride can’t be beat and you can sleep throughout the trip. The
down side is that you can’t do side trips and can’t stop on those road stores which is the charm of Philippines.
- If you can afford renting from a national brand, do it. You could buy their insurance and
erase your worries away. Prepare to pay though.
- If you have a family member who has a vehicle that you can use, do it. They usually have a driver
to drive you around and know where to go. All you have to worry about is the “utang na loob” that will hunt you
forever.
- Ask friends and family about who they use for transportation while they go to the Philippines. That
way, you know that this source is reliable.
If you exhausted the top four, then you have the important job of looking for a local rental vehicle. A lot of people
rent cars in the Philippines because of safety and convenience. Manila may be safe during the day, but you have to be careful
when walking or traveling at night; especially when you really don’t know the area.
If you are ever caught
in an odd time in manila, you may get a taxi that happened to have a broken meter. I remember paying 600 pesos for a taxi
ride from the bus stop to the airport because the meter was “broken”. Or paying 200 pesos from terminal 1 to terminal
2 just so the taxi will take me there without being late.
So, if you are thinking of contacting local rental car business
that offer rental cars, know the basics.
01. Price for car rental within metro manila range from 2500 to 3000 pesos
per 8 hrs depending on the vehicle. Drivers are usually included in the price because it would release you from any liability
for damages related to the driver's actions.
02. Make sure you ask for what is the type of vehicle and the condition of the rental. I’ve seen
rentals that are plain pieces of sh*t.
03. If you plan to go out of manila, ask if they have a diesel car. Most out
of town trips don’t include fuel in their price. Diesel is cheaper (in manila anyway) and diesel engines sips fuel which
would lower your holiday cost.
04. Tolls, driver accommodations and food are always on your bill during your out of
town trips. Be careful on those rentals that provide an “all inclusive” price. They usually rip.
05. The
vehicle is a machine, the driver is not. Don’t compromise your safety by having him drive excessively. Let him sleep.
06. With the philippines saturated with skilled workers, driver do tend to get paid minimally. . .a little tip won’t
hurt.
Thank you for supporting the Philippine economy, but that doesn't mean that you don't have to be smart in choosing
your rental car business.
